Living Through Leopard Hell

So if you read my previous post I was pretty excited about getting leopard on the day it was released. I also wrote this post on how great Apple is at launching products. Well let me just say I have spent my entire day in Apple Hell. You have probably read all of the post on the leopard blue screen of death errors. You can also read more here, here, and here.

jobs-kills-leopard Living Through Leopard Hell We have five Macbooks, I installed it on two and then Kaboom! In the long tradition of Microsoft stealing from Apple suddenly the tables have turned and leopard is giving me the blue screen of death. It is actually a simple fix you simply reinstall the os with the archive feature. This is an old support trick I had to learn with Windows (rename the windows folder to winold [or whatever you want] and reinstall. Windows thinks you have formatted the drive and you don’t lose anything). So I don’t know how to share this next part but either Apple thought ahead and automated this processes. Or they were in too big of a hurry to fix the install bugs and automated the process. Either way I was pissed that Apple is turning into Microsoft. (I am also upset that Starbucks is turning into McDonalds but that is another post.)

It took about 4 hours but we were able to get computer number 3 up and running. Some of the apps were missing (firefox) but all of the content was there.

I am yo-yoing from raving apple fan to less than satisfied customer. It seems like they are making more and more decisions based on what is right for them instead of what is right for us. Like the iphone only being on cingular instead of all networks. Rushing out a me too operating system to follow Vista. That being said I am typing this on Macbook with Leopard…

  1. Not dissing anyone. Apple isn’t microsoft. Could you imagine the testing enviroment the iphone would be in if it was available on all networks. I think Apple plans on dropping the apple seed on all phones right now they are selling beta and getting really good reaction for it. Wont be long till all phone people will be caring the iphone 3

  3. Why is the most incompetent people can’t install an operating system as simple as OS X, yet can manage to get a blog exposing just how incompetent they really are?

  4. No blue screens for me, since I always do a clean install. It takes longer but I find it to be a good way to clean things up a bit and to learn about some things about the new os. I originally went for the case-sensitive file system but Adobe didn’t like that at all, so I got to watch the install video again.

Some of it’s great- I can use the built in Apache and PHP now. The only wrinkly was that in the new os, there’s no Netinfo Manager which was the ‘right’ place to enter virtual host address names to reach different development virtuals in apache. I ended up modifying the hosts file which is how I’ve always done it previously (ignoring the ‘do not edit this file’ warnings. It’d sure be nice when an app is gone if they could specify what the new workflow is. :)

    Lovin’ it.

  5. Good Point - As I continue to use leopard and see how cool it is my Apple cup is now half full. It isn’t running over like it was last week but I am sure it will fill up again soon.

    Thanks for keeping it positive.

  6. An archive install is a long-standing method to install an OS. Why are you considering it’s inclusion a sign of Apple no longer caring? It’s unfortunate that the upgrade install didn’t work seamlessly for you, but an archive install is a perfectly valid and desirable way to install Leopard even if nothing had gone wrong. Personally, because I always mess with my computer and use unsupported hacks, I always perform archive installs (or erase the drive completely). I’m glad Apple makes this an obvious and not a hidden option.
